Hughes Joe K. (832 sqdn) Catapulted into Bay of Bengal from HMS Begum on failure of catapult pre dawn December 1944 Rescued by Escort.
I was a TAG on 832 Squadron aboard HMS Begum and witnessed Joe Hughes Avenger disappearing under the waves after the catapult failed. We were next plane off so had a grandstand view from my turret as the ship passed alongside and could see the outline of Joe's Avenger by the flashing lights/sparks that were taking place inside . We were about to start a dawn patrol, it was a particularly dark morning for the Bay of Bengal and visual contact had been lost between Begum and the attendant Destroyer during the night. We flew off  half an hour later after half our depth charges were removed. The ship did a full circle of the stricken crew and dropped four flame floats before resuming course, the crew were eventually  picked up by the attendant destroyer who kindly informed us by aldis lamp as we disappeared into the distance. Peter's aircraft was about to land, when the Com.Flying - a Royal Marine Major no less - yelled out "Send him round again" from the bridge.... Too late! The pilot gave her full revs., caught a wire and over the side the Stringbag went.  The crew did not suffer too much as they knocked off a Carley Float as they went over my head; they got into the Carley Float and awaited rescue by the ship's seaboat.
